Raconter à l’époque moderne  

le récit et ses usages, XVI^e-XVIII^e siècle

 

Le XXII^e Colloque jeunes chercheurs du CIREM 16-18, qui se tiendra les 25-26 mai 2023 à l’Université d’Ottawa, aura pour thème le récit et ses usages à la période moderne. Afin d’accueillir des chercheurs et chercheuses de divers horizons, nous avons retenu une définition large du récit comme acte de relater des évènements factuels ou fictifs.

Fidèle à la tradition du CIREM 16-18, ce colloque cherche à réunir en un même lieu différentes disciplines : histoire, littérature, philosophie, théâtre et histoire de l’art. Le thème du colloque invite précisément à des formes de décloisonnement et permet d’interroger la frontière poreuse entre ces nombreuses disciplines à l’époque moderne.

 

Par exemple, dans le récit littéraire se tissent des liens étroits entre philosophie et littérature. Sous l’impulsion d’une rationalité réfléchissante qui éclot dans le courant de l’humanisme, les récits fictifs connaissent une grande effervescence, ainsi que le montrent au XVIII^e siècle les contes philosophiques de Voltaire. Les écrits irrévérencieux se mettent à foisonner et on voit s’éployer un éveil nouveau à l’orientalisme et à ses infinies potentialités narratives et philosophiques. Le théâtre est aussi le lieu d’un usage renouvelé des récits bibliques que la Réforme et la Contre-Réforme convoquent à leurs fins. C’est alors que naît, au confluent de l’imitation des Anciens et des exigences de l’époque, la tragédie biblique qui jouira d’une fortune exceptionnelle jusqu’au XVIII^e siècle. Ces exemples invitent à explorer les manières par lesquelles différents acteurs et actrices se saisissent du récit et l’investissent à l’époque moderne. Certains portent, par ailleurs, à réfléchir aux stratégies de vulgarisation et de diffusion de savoirs spécialisés ou encore à la position intermédiaire que peut occuper le récit entre réalité et fiction. Tel est le cas par exemple de nombreuses formes — canards, histoires tragiques, causes célèbres — qui émergent à la croisée du droit et de la littérature.

Nous encourageons ainsi des communications portant sur le récit dans son acception plus restreinte (conte de fées, récit de voyage, récit biblique, conte philosophique, etc.), ou mettant en valeur la part de récit dans d’autres types de sources (par exemple le récit de soi dans la correspondance ou la place du récit dans une théorie picturale fondée sur l’ut pictura poesis), mais aussi sur des questions plus théoriques. À l’époque moderne, différentes possibilités d’expérimentation s’entrouvrent à la fois dans les formes que peut prendre le récit et dans les objets qui peuvent être racontés. Les modernistes se retrouvent ainsi devant des enjeux méthodologiques (comment traiter ou vérifier de telles sources ?), épistémologiques (que peut-on connaître par le récit ?), esthétiques (quelle expérience esthétique se déploie dans le récit mis en mots, en images ou en scène ?), politiques (quelles critiques peuvent se faire par le truchement du récit ; comment peut-il être utilisé comme outil politique ?) et rhétoriques (comment aide-t-il ou non à vulgariser ou à convaincre ?). Nous invitons aussi les chercheurs et chercheuses à renouveler notre compréhension du récit et à s’interroger sur son rôle au sein de leur propre démarche. Comment raconte-t-on l’histoire à l’époque moderne et comment raconter l’histoire de cette période ? Qu’est-ce que l’usage du récit apporte aux écrivain·es et aux philosophes de l’époque ou encore aux chercheurs et chercheuses contemporain·es ?

Ce colloque accueillera les communications de jeunes chercheurs et chercheuses (à la maîtrise ou au « master », au doctorat ou au postdoctorat) qui travaillent dans différents champs des sciences humaines : histoire, philosophie, littérature, théâtre, histoire de l’art, etc. Les communications, inédites et en français, ne devront pas dépasser les vingt minutes allouées à chaque participant·e. The Research Project on Power, conflict and freedom: Spinoza and the paths of modern and contemporary political philosophy on democracy* announces one (1) postdoctoral position in the Philosophy Department, University of São Paulo (USP), in:

- Early Modern Political Philosophy (16th-18th centuries)
or
- History of Early Modern Philosophy (16th-18th centuries)

The fellowship initially carries a two-year term, but is renewable for one additional year (but not after July 2024), beginning in July 2021 (with start date negotiable). The Fellow will be a Post-Doctoral member of the Department of Philosophy, and will join the research activities of the Research Project (research seminars, conferences, meetings and elaboration of scientific reports). This fellowship corresponds to a research position, with no teaching responsibilities attached.

The fellowship is sponsored by FAPESP. The chosen candidate will earn R$ 7.373,10 (Brazilian currency) per month, tax free.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

Applicants should have completed the PhD in Philosophy, but, as required by FAPESP, not at the University of São Paulo. The PhD should have been completed preferably no earlier than 2016. For the position, the applicant must include:
- an updated Curriculum Vitae;
- copy of PhD certification (diploma or other official document).
- a statement of proposed research (no more than 10 pages, plus 1 separate page for bibliography), specifying the topic(s) to be studied, including a research schedule for the first two years, a list of expected publications and their connection with the theme of the main project;
- a writing sample (dissertation chapter or other paper);
- one letter of recommendation.

*Power, conflict and freedom: Spinoza and the paths of modern and contemporary political philosophy on democracy

Abstract: Three moments are decisive in the constitution of political philosophy: the one that Moses Finley called “the invention of politics” to refer to the birth of Greek democracy and the Roman republic; the one defined by Machiavelli through the original division of society between the desire of the Great to oppress and command and that of the People to be neither oppressed nor commanded; and the one which, with Spinoza, introduced the modern idea of democracy as an immanent power of the multitudo or collective power of creation and expression of rights. These three moments open the field of the history of the invention of the republic and democracy as an exercise of freedom and invention of rights, politics being effected as a passage from the logic of force to the logic of power, that is, from war to legitimacy of conflict under laws. Of these three f ounding moments, we will take as point of reference the modern conception of Spinozistic origin. By means of this we will examined, on the one hand, the political significance of the emergence of modern ideas of individual and natural / civil right, and, on the other hand, the continuities and ruptures in political thought brought about by contemporary philosophy – that is, the development of ideas of class struggle, of state, of power and of violence. We believe that it is possible to find there a tradition within which Spinoza’s political thought gains a new light, a tradition designed by contemporary authors who, like Spinoza, in so far as they were concerned to mark the legitimate instance of the conflict, searched for support in the ancients and Machiavelli in order to understand the political participation of the citizens under the aegis of the struggle for guarantee and conquest of new rights, having as reference the defense of freedom of dissent.

Le projet de recherche « pouvoir, conflits, liberté :  Spinoza et les voies de la philosophie politique moderne et contemporaine sur la question de la démocratie" * offre trois (3) bourses postdoctorales au Département de philosophie de l'Université de São Paulo, dans les domaines suivants :

 - Philosophie politique moderne (XVIe-XVIIIe siècles)

- Philosophie politique contemporaine

- Histoire de la philosophie moderne (XVIe-XVIIIe siècles)

 Les bourses ont une durée de deux ans à compter d'octobre 2020, mais sont renouvelables pour un an et demi supplémentaires. Chaque boursier sera lié au Département de philosophie, participera aux activités du projet de recherche (séminaires de recherche, colloques, réunions) et contribuera à la rédaction des rapports scientifiques. Ces bourses ne comportent aucune obligation d'enseignement.

 Les bourses sont financées par la FAPESP. Les candidats sélectionnés gagneront 7,373,10 R $ par mois.

 Les candidats peuvent postuler à plus d'une bourse. Ils doivent avoir terminé le doctorat en philosophie, de préférence à une date postérieure à 2015. Pour chaque bourse, le candidat doit envoyer :

PostDoc : Early Modern Cosmology: Institutions and Metaphysics

Please, find attached the call for one postdoctoral fellowship (1 year with the possibility of an extension of one extra year) linked to the research ERC endeavor EarlyModernCosmology – “Institutions and Metaphysics of Cosmology in the Epistemic Networks of Seventeenth-Century Europe” (GA 725883) which has received funding from the European Research Council - Horizon 2020 and is based at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (unive.it/earlymoderncosmology).

The research endeavor addresses the confessional, political and ideological settings of early modern science, with a particular focus on cosmology. The project has an overarching thematic, geographical, and geopolitical scope and is reinforced by a methodological and philosophical reflection on political epistemology informed by Gramscian views on society, culture, and politics.

As Principal Investigator I am currently looking for one post-doctoral fellow with an outstanding project in one or more of the following research areas relevant to the ERC endeavor:

1.             Early-modern cultural history of science: Cosmology and related disciplines in their socio-political context;

2.            Early-modern institutional history: Early-modern institutional history of ideas    and/or epistemic webs in their socio-cultural and political entanglements;

3.                 Political epistemology: Methodological problems of historical epistemology for the investigation of science, religion and ideology.

Job description

We offer a four-year fellowship for the completion of a PhD dissertation in the history of medieval or early-modern philosophy or science up to the Enlightenment; ancient philosophy is not excluded. Applications are invited from high-quality prospective PhD fellows who have a documentable expertise in these research areas.

The candidate will be enrolled in the Groningen Graduate School of Philosophy. A PhD training program is part of the agreement. Supervision will be carried out by the Groningen department.

The successful candidate is also expected to assist in some teaching. Knowledge of Dutch is no requirement.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a master’s degree in philosophy or related area, plus an excellent academic record. He/she should have a very good command of English and strong communication and academic writing skills.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary of € 2,222 (salary scale PhD candidates Dutch Universities) gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 2,840 gross per month in the final year, based on a fulltime position, excluding a 8% holiday allowance and a 8.3% end of the year bonus. The position requires residence in Groningen and must result in a PhD thesis within the 4-year contract period.

The position offered is for four years. The successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that a successful completion of the PhD thesis within the contract period is to be expected.

The preferred starting date is 1 January 2018.

Pedagogical Approaches to Medieval and Early Modern Studies

The last two decades have seen radical revisions to curricula at universities and colleges around the world.  But have curricular changes been accompanied by pedagogical developments? When it comes to teaching, graduate students often learn by doing. By virtue of their experiments and their proximity to the undergraduate curriculum, they are among the most innovative educators on their campuses. The Medieval and Early Modern Students Association at UCLA invites graduate students to share their experience at a conference on June 7 that deals with teaching Medieval and Early Modern material in the undergraduate classroom. Papers may address, but are not limited to, the following topics and lines of inquiry:
·               Methodological approaches that lend themselves to Medieval and Early Modern Studies
·               Classroom conditions (ideological, practical, technological, social/cultural, financial, theoretical) that shape approaches and assumptions in literary study
·               Accessibility of older material to today’s undergraduates
·               Student-directed learning and the canon
·               The learning goals of an historical curriculum

·               Challenges and opportunities of teaching older material

We welcome abstracts from a variety of fields within or adjacent to Medieval and Early Modern studies. While specific teaching techniques are encouraged, we’d like papers that include a broader theoretical and pedagogical scope. Abstracts of less than 500 words for 20-minute papers should be emailed to memsa.ucla@gmail.com by March 15 with the subject line CONFERENCE ABSTRACT. Papers should be timed to less than 20 minutes.
