How does the digitization of our world change our orientation?

It is obvious that the digitization of our world changes our orientation. But how does it do this? To orient oneself means to successfully find one's way in an ever-changing world. Our world seems to transform more rapidly than ever before, at least in part due to the digitization of its production and communication processes themselves. By means of digital technologies, production and communication becomes easier; but at the same time, we have to master the transformations that permeate both our everyday life and our political, economic, legal, scientific, artistic, and ethical orientations. How do the new digital technologies fit to the conditions and structures of our human orientation? What do their fittings enable and promise, what will they preclude, constrain or render impossible?

The philosophical prize competition is organized by the Hodges Foundation for Philosophical Orientation, which is based on Werner Stegmaier's philosophy of orientation, which investigates the conditions and structures of everyday human orientation. Stegmaier's original German book Philosophie der Orientierung (2008) has been translated by Reinhard G. Mueller in an abridged and improved version to What is Orientation? A Philosophical Investigation (Berlin/Boston: De Gruyter, 2019).

For this prize competition, the foundation expects new contributions (  yet published in any form) from various points of view, of any length, and with promising philosophical perspectives. Authors may connect to the book What is Orientation? but are not required to do so. In any case, they should offer new insights and prospects concerning the digitization of our orientation. The preferred language is English. The deadline for the submissions is October 25th, 2020.

The foundation provides the following prize awards:

• 1st prize award: $25,000
• 2nd prize award: $15,000
• 3rd prize award: $10,000
• Special student award: $5,000 (if no student is among the first 3).

The jury consists of the board of the Hodges Foundation for Philosophical Orientation (Mike Hodges, Tina Hodges, Werner Stegmaier, Reinhard G. Mueller) and two additional reviewers. The award-winning contributions will be first published on the website of the Hodges Foundation for Philosophical Orientation.

Two Postdocs in Philosophy and/or History of Biology

The FNRS MIS project Digital History and Philosophy of Biology (DHPB), led by Prof. Charles Pence at the Centre de philosophie des sciences et sociétés (CEFISES) and Institut supérieur de philosophie (ISP) at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) is advertising two two-year post-doctoral fellowships in history and/or philosophy of biology.

The DHPB project aims to expand the use of the tools of digital humanities – particularly textual analysis – to study the history and philosophy of the life sciences. We have developed an application (see doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0146004) and a corpus of journal article data (see doi:10.1016/j.shpsc.2016.04.003) enabling us to study at a broad scale the journal literature in evolutionary biology and related fields, offering a novel perspective on the growth and development of biological science (dating back to as early as 1860).
We will gladly review postdoctoral fellowship applications from candidates trained in either philosophy or history of science, as well as digital humanities or the sciences (if such candidates have expertise in philosophical or historical work). The project has a broad interdisciplinary focus, and the PI is trained in both the history and the philosophy of science. The ideal candidate will have similar interdisciplinary training and research credentials.
The project provides funding for each postdoc to hold one workshop inviting a senior researcher to campus for one week, and for the group as a whole to host a final conference in early 2021 (with the intent of publishing an edited volume containing its proceedings), as well as equipment and travel.
This postdoctoral research fellowship is funded by the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique – FNRS under grant no. F.4526.19.

Eligibility Criteria

• PhD in philosophy of science, history of science, or related fields (will also consider candidates with doctoral degrees in digital humanities or the sciences, if expertise in philosophy or history can be demonstrated).
• PhD earned no earlier than May 1, 2014, following the defense of a thesis. This date may be delayed by one year if the candidate has had or adopted a child. (Requirement of granting agency.)
• Candidates must not have resided or exercised their principal activity (work, study, etc.) in Belgium for more than 24 months within the last 3 years. (Requirement of granting agency.)
• Interest in working with digital tools is required; some demonstrated expertise or use of such tools (prior work in DH, visualization or programming experience, etc.) is a benefit.
• A proposed research project in the history or philosophy of science that would be either impossible without, or substantially aided by, the application of digital humanities techniques.
• Strong enthusiasm for interdisciplinary, collaborative work.
• Written and oral proficiency in English is required. UCLouvain is a French-speaking university, but the working language of the lab is English. French proficiency would thus be useful for daily life, but is not mandatory.

• Description of a research project (between 5 and 10 pages), with particular emphasis on the applicability of digital research methods to the research goals
  • Projects which make an integral, ineliminable use of text analysis and related tools currently in use in the lab will receive top priority, though proposals which expand the lab’s focus or toolset will also be considered

• Sample of written work
• Two letters of reference
• Graduate transcript, if available

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Victoria invites applications for a tenure track, Assistant Professor position to begin 1 July 2017. Area of specialisation: philosophy of mind or philosophy of science. Area of competence: open, but broad philosophical interests are assets. Duties will include research, undergraduate and graduate instruction and administrative service. The successful applicant will have the potential to be a superior researcher and an excellent teacher.

Requirements

Applicants should hold a PhD in Philosophy by time of appointment. Ideal candidates will have begun publishing and will have a well-articulated research and publication plan. The Department seeks a candidate who can offer undergraduate and graduate courses in philosophy of mind or philosophy of science and who can also teach introduction to philosophy, critical thinking and basic logic. Candidates should supply evidence of their approach to pedagogy and their preparedness to teach excellent courses. In addition, the successful candidate should be able to supervise MA and PhD students in philosophy of mind or philosophy science and should be able assist the supervision of students in related fields.

4 Doctoral Candidate Positions

in Philosophy of Science and/or Ethics of Science

starting October 1st, 2016, within the Graduiertenkolleg (research training group) GRK 2073 Integrating Ethics and Epistemology of Scientific Research.

Appointment will be for three years. The positions will be filled as 65% Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter positions on salary scale TV-L 13. (This amounts to a monthly net salary roughly between 1460 and 1580 €, plus benefits such as health insurance.) Two of the positions are expected to be located at Leibniz Universität Hannover and the other two at Bielefeld University.

GRK 2073 Integrating Ethics and Epistemology of Scientific Research is a research training group that is established as a joint project by Leibniz Universität Hannover and Bielefeld University. It is funded by the German national funding agency (DFG). Its research program aims at bridging the gap between theory and practice in philosophy of science in two ways: firstly, it examines new connections between theoretical philosophy of science (epistemology, metaphysics) and practical philosophy of science (ethics of science, political philosophy of science); secondly, it analyses relevant links between the cognitive dimension of the sciences (theories, hypotheses, discourses, models) and the material culture of the sciences (objects, equipment, experiments, practices). The working language of GRK 2073 is English.

Applicants must be fluent in English and should be able to demonstrate an interest in philosophy of science, broadly construed to include also ethics and political philosophy of science. They should hold a pertinent university degree (typically an MA degree in Philosophy or HPS) and must be eligible to enroll as doctoral students in Philosophy at Leibniz Universität Hannover or Bielefeld University. They need to specify a dissertation project that fits the aims of the research program of GRK 2073 as described above.

The obligations of each holder of one of the advertised positions will be to conduct research on a dissertation project that contributes to the research program of GRK 2073 and to participate in the training activities that are specified by the qualification program. Holders of the positions must enroll as doctoral students in philosophy at Leibniz Universität Hannover or Bielefeld University. It is expected that they take residence in the region of their respective campus.

Three Postdoctoral Fellowships in Applied Ethics, Philosophy of Neuroscience, and Foundations of Physics.

The Rotman Institute of Philosophy is inviting applications for three Postdoctoral Fellowships in Applied Ethics, Philosophy of Neuroscience (in collaboration with Western's Brain and Mind Institute), and Foundations of Physics.
 
The Rotman Institute of Philosophy is situated in one of Canada's leading departments of philosophy. It brings together philosophers and scientists to work on problems of social significance. The faculty includes two Canada Research Chair holders; ongoing research focuses on a variety philosophical problems arising in contemporary physics, biology, cognitive neuroscience, and medical science.
 
Each Postdoctoral Fellowship has a one-year term with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The Fellow will have an office within the Rotman Institute. She or he will be required to involve themselves fully in the research life of the Institute by conducting research leading to peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations, and by participating in conferences, research groups, reading groups, and outreach activities.
 
Candidates must have had a PhD in Philosophy conferred within five years of the start of the Fellowship. All PhD requirements must be completed by the starting date of this Postdoctoral Fellowship, July 1, 2015. The stipend is $40,500 CDN. Additionally, the Fellow will be provided a research allowance of $5,000 CDN.
 
Postdoctoral Fellows at the Rotman Institute have gone on to great things. Rachael Brown (Postdoc in the Institute 2013-2014) won the Sir Karl Popper Prize for 2014, for the best paper appearing in the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science. Kerry McKenzie (2013-14) was hired as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at UC San Diego after her Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Rotman Institute. Trevor Pearce (2011-12) has also become an Assistant Professor, at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

En vue de favoriser les échanges entre jeunes chercheurs en philosophie des sciences et de participer à la constitution d’un réseau de jeunes chercheurs au niveau international, la Société de philosophie des sciences (http://www.sps-philoscience.org/) organise chaque année des Rencontres doctorales internationales en philosophie des sciences. En 2014, ces rencontres se tiendront à Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgique), à l'Université catholique de Louvain, les jeudi 25 et vendredi 26 septembre 2014.

 

Des doctorants à partir de la deuxième année de thèse ainsi que de jeunes docteurs ayant soutenu depuis moins de deux ans à la date de soumission y présenteront leurs travaux relevant de la philosophie des sciences, comprise en un sens large (philosophie générale des sciences, philosophie de la logique, philosophie des mathématiques, philosophie de la physique, philosophie de la biologie, philosophie des sciences sociales, théorie de la connaissance scientifique, etc.). Les interventions se feront de préférence en français, bien que les interventions en anglais soient acceptées. Elles dureront 30 minutes, dont 5 minutes seront consacrées à une présentation générale du sujet de thèse, et seront suivies d'une période de questions. Sans faire de concessions sur la qualité de leur travail disciplinaire, les participants seront appelés à mettre en avant des problématiques générales de philosophie des sciences.

 

Les doctorants et les jeunes docteurs qui souhaitent participer aux Rencontres sont invités à soumettre un résumé long de leur intervention (6000 signes maximum) préparé pour une évaluation anonyme. Ils joindront dans un autre fichier une courte présentation de leur thèse et de la façon dont l’intervention s’y insère (2000 signes maximum) ainsi que les informations suivantes: nom et prénom, sujet de thèse, directeur de thèse, établissement, équipe de recherche (s'il y a lieu), école doctorale, année de première inscription en thèse et pour les jeunes docteurs, date de soutenance de thèse et appartenance actuelle. Les documents peuvent être envoyés sous format .pdf ou .doc.

 

Les propositions d’intervention doivent être adressées à rdips2014@gmail.com le 1er avril 2014 au plus tard. Le comité de programme fera part de ses décisions mi-mai 2014 et le nom d’un conférencier invité sera également communiqué. Par ailleurs, le comité d'organisation encourage les étudiants qui n'ont pas l'intention de présenter eux-mêmes à venir assister aux Rencontres qui devraient proposer cette année encore un panorama de la recherche contemporaine en philosophie des sciences à un niveau accessible.

Two £5000 student tuition bursaries available for MSc study in HSTM, 2013-2014

CHSTM is offering two £5000 taught masters (MSc) student bursary awards for suitably qualified candidates accepted for our full-time or part-time postgraduate taught MSc programme whose intentions are to subsequently pursue a PhD. The awards, which are tenable from September 2013, will cover the entire tuition fee for UK or European Union students, or partial support for students paying the higher international rate, who are equally eligible to apply. They do not include a stipend or support for accommodation.

CHSTM is one of the world's leading centres for history of science, technology and medicine and their relations with society, with a growing focus on science communication. Our innovative MSc programme aims to provide a comprehensive historical introduction to nineteenth- and twentieth-century science, technology and medicine in their wider social, economic, cultural and political contexts, including science communication and the relationship between science and the public. It also offers systematic training in historical approaches to a wide variety of scientific, technical and medical knowledge and practices. We have a lively postgraduate community of Masters and PhD students, and a large and successful group of postdoctoral researchers. Our study facilities are excellent, and we have an outstanding track record of progression from Masters to PhD, and from doctoral to postdoctoral study. We pride ourselves on the interdisciplinary nature of our programmes, and cater for students with a science background as well as those arriving with a humanities or social science undergraduate degree. Call for Papers

Graduate students who have not yet defended their PhD thesis are invited to submit papers on any topic in philosophy of logic, philosophy of mathematics, and philosophy of physics.

Papers in philosophy of physics will be considered for the 10th Annual Clifton Memorial book prize. The contest will be adjudicated by philosophy of science faculty members at Western.

We recommend that papers be no longer than 5000 words as presentations will be limited to 30-35 minutes and will be followed by a 20-minute period of discussion. Please submit papers by email (preferably as a .pdf attachment) by February 24th, 2013. Papers should be prepared for blind review, and should be accompanied by an abstract (no longer than 300 words) as well as e-mail content or cover sheet containing the author’s name, institutional affiliation, title of the paper, and email address. We will endeavor to make accommodations available to all visiting graduate students.
