Sujet : Ces dernières années, l'apprentissage automatique, un sous-domaine de l'intelligence artificielle (IA), a suscité un intérêt considérable dans les milieux de la santé en raison de son potentiel pour aider à améliorer l'efficacité et la sécurité à tous les niveaux de nos systèmes de santé, du diagnostic à l'organisation des soins. Nos sociétés tentent d'anticiper les changements que l’IA pourrait provoquer (Conseil européen, 2020) et de mettre en place les mesures qui nous assurent qu'elles suivent des principes, des valeurs morales, des codes professionnels et des normes sociales. Idéalement, ces concepts éthiques doivent être intégrés dès la conception des outils (ethical design). À cet égard, les modèles d'apprentissage automatique présentent des faiblesses bien connues qui font actuellement l'objet d'études dans le domaine de l'informatique. Premièrement, les modèles d'apprentissage automatique peuvent être soumis à différents types de biais. Deuxièmement, les modèles d'intelligence artificielle sont pour la plupart des modèles en boîte noire (Wang et al. 2020). Les utilisateurs de ces systèmes perdent leur capacité à contester les décisions automatiques. L'utilisation des boîtes noires soulève d'importants problèmes éthiques. Par exemple, dans quelle mesure les modèles fondés sur l’IA incarnent-ils des valeurs qui entraînent des conséquences imprévues et des résultats injustes ou discriminatoires (Keskinbora 2019 ; Chen et al. 2019) ? Devons-nous accepter les décisions prises sur la base de modèles de type boîte noire dont les résultats ne peuvent être clairement interprétés et expliqués ? Dans quelle mesure le patient et les professionnels de la santé peuvent-ils et doivent-ils faire confiance à ces modèles ? Comment l’utilisation de l’IA affecte-t-elle la confiance de patients des traitements qui leur sont proposés et des professionnels de la santé qui les proposent ?  En abordant ces questions spécifiquement par rapport à l’IA, le doctorant devrait apporter un regard à la fois éthique et épistémologique sur le développement de la science et des techniques dans le domaine de la santé.

L’encadrement multi-disciplinaire de la thèse propose un environnement avec une expertise dans les domaines de l’IA et des applications concrètes à des données de santé. Les projets peuvent avoir des aspects applicatifs pour questionner des outils fondés sur de l’IA (outils existants ou à adapter selon une question de recherche), ou encore des expérimentations impliquant des cas d’usages réels en santé.

Doctoral Fellowship offered within the framework of the project CNRS 80 Prime 2021: “Ethical Design of Artificial Intelligence Models in Patient Management and Treatment Plans” (ED-AIM)

Disciplinary background: medical ethics / applied ethics / philosophy of science / computer science.

Period: 3-year contract (36 months), September 2021 – August 2024. Admission at the Doctoral School pf Philosophy at the University of Lyon (ED 487) with an affiliation at the CNRS institute IHRIM (UMR 5316, ENS de Lyon). Obligation to undertake prolonged research stays at the Maison Française d’Oxford (UMIFRE 11 and USR 3129 CNRS, Oxford) of total duration of minimum 12 months.

Profile: Master 2, MPhil or equivalent in applied ethics/medical ethics/philosophy of science. Some competence in computer science is required. Topic: In recent years, machine learning, a subfield of artificial intelligence (herea.er AI), has generated considerable interest in health care circles due to its potential to help improving efficiency and safety at all levels of our health care systems, from diagnostics to the organisation of care. Our societies attempt to anticipate the changes that IA may bring (Conseil Européen, 2020) and put safeguards into place to ensure that it abides by our moral principles, principles of professional conduct, and social norms. Ideally, ethical notions should be integrated into these tools at their very inception (ethical design). Machine learning models do, however, have well-known weaknesses that are currently being investigated in the field of computer science. First, machine learning model can be subject to different kinds of bias. Second, artificial intelligence models are mostly black-box models (Wang et al. 2020). Users of such systems lose their ability to contest automatic decisions. The use of black-box models raises important ethical problems.  For example, to what extent do such models embody values inasmuch as they entail actions and choices and can inadvertently contain design or implementation errors that result in unforeseen consequences and unfair outcomes (Keskinbora 2019; Chen et al. 2019)? Should we embrace decisions made on the basis of black-box models whose outputs cannot be clearly interpreted and explained? Or, to what extent can and should patient and practitioners trust these models? How does the use of IA affect patients’ trust in the treatments offered and in the health workers offering them? By approaching these question specifically in relation to IA, the doctoral candidate should bring both an ethical and an epistemological perspective on these issues within the development of science and technology in health management.

The multi-disciplinary context and supervision of the thesis offers support in the domains of IA and its concrete application in relation to health management. The project can imply the application and use IA tools (either already existing tools, or tools that can be appropriately adapted to the research question) or experiments or survey that concern the actual use of such tools in health management.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Artificial Intelligence is pervading every aspect of our life: it is present in decisions made in healthcare, transportation, finances, education, and governmental level, just to mention a few players. With it, explanation for high-stakes decision making (XAI) is at the center of current debates, receiving much (and deserved) attention from industry and academy alike. AI is essentially a sociotechnical system, where a decision maker interacts with various sources of information and decision-support tools, a process whose quality should be assessed in terms of the final, aggregated outcome —the quality of the decision— rather than assessing only the quality of the decision-support tool in isolation (e.g., in terms of its predictive accuracy and standalone precision). It is therefore important to develop tools that explain their predictions in meaningful terms, a property rarely matched by AI systems available in the market today. The explanation problem for a
decision-support system can be understood as a trade-off between what algorithms can safely ignore and what meaningful information should absolutely be included to make an informed decision. Thus, the problem of XAI is intertwined with epistemic and normative problems, such as trustworthiness (what sort of knowledge we have and what can safely be ignored), comprehensibility (human meaningfulness of the explanations), and accountability (humans keeping the ultimate responsibility for the decision). In this context, several epistemological, ethical, and legal questions emerge, such as: what is the logic for a successful XAI? how can we ensure reliability and trust? which ethical concerns emerge in the context of (un)successful explanations? Is current XAI complying with regulations? The successful candidate will work in the intersections of epistemological and ethical issues, with a strong emphasis on the normative aspects of explanatory AI. Different ethical frameworks and principles will be studied to understand the implications of XAI and the role of different stakeholders in high-stake decision makings (developers, users, individuals affected by system’s actions, legal experts, etc.). Case studies will also be focus of this project, as they will engage relevant stakeholders to capture adherence to social, legal, ethical norms, and, ultimately, human responsibility.

This PhD project will be developed within the EU Horizon2020 SoBigData++. SoBigData++ strives to deliver a distributed, Pan-European, multi-disciplinary research infrastructure for big social data analytics, coupled with the consolidation of a cross-disciplinary European research community, aimed at using social mining and big data to understand the complexity of our contemporary, globally-interconnected society. SoBigData++ is set to advance on such ambitious tasks thanks to SoBigData, the predecessor project that started this construction in 2015. Becoming an advanced community, SoBigData++ will strengthen its tools and services to empower researchers and innovators through a platform for the design and execution of large-scale social mining experiments. It will be open to users with diverse background, accessible on project cloud (aligned with EOSC) and also exploiting supercomputing facilities. Pushing the FAIR principles further, SoBigData++ will render social mining experiments more easily designed, adjusted and repeatable by domain experts that are not data scientists. SoBigData++ will move forward from a starting community of pioneers to a wide and diverse scientific movement, capable of empowering the next generation of responsible social data scientists, engaged in the grand societal challenges laid out in its exploratories: Societal Debates and Online Misinformation, Sustainable Cities for Citizens, Demography, Economics & Finance 2.0, Migration Studies, Sport Data Science, Social Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Explainable Machine Learning. SoBigData++ will advance from the awareness of ethical and legal challenges to concrete tools that operationalise ethics with value-sensitive design, incorporating values and norms for privacy protection, fairness, transparency and pluralism. SoBigData++ will deliver an accelerator of data-driven innovation that facilitates the collaboration with industry to develop joint pilot projects, and will consolidate an RI ready for the ESFRI Roadmap and sustained by a SoBigData Association.

REQUIREMENTS

• Master’s degree or equivalent in philosophy or similar discipline.
• Candidates with interests in analytical philosophy (e.g. ethics of
algorithms, ethics of AI, ethics of technology, philosophy of action)
and strong affinity (or degree in) philosophy of science, epistemology,
philosophy of technology, philosophy of engineering and computer science
are strongly encouraged to apply.
• Strong interests in interdisciplnary research, principally with
computer scientists.
• Excellent command of written and spoken English.
• Excellent communication skills and interested in translating research
ideas and findings for the benefit of non-academic stakeholders (e.g.
managers and policymakers).
• The ability to work independently and as a team player.

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

Access to Fellowship

Access to the Willard McCarty Fellowship is given to interdisciplinary-minded academic and non-academic researchers. The Department reserves the right to appoint one Fellow for his or her outstanding and exceptional work in the field. The alternative route to the scheme is to apply as outlined in the Section ‘How and When to Apply?’.
Under both routes, the Fellowship must be undertaken at the Department of Digital Humanities for a period from one to two weeks.
Grants of up to £2,500 to successful candidates will cover the following:

• Round trip standard class fares
• Accommodation and subsistence

We can provide advice, but appointees must make their own travel and living arrangements. They will need to seek additional funding elsewhere to cover any expenses that exceed the grant.
The Department will provide Fellows with office space. Fellows will be welcome to attend classes and seminars, to work with the staff of the Department, meet affiliated partners, such as staff of the King’s Digital Lab, and access Strand campus and all facilities of the Maughan Library.

The Role of Fellows

Fellows will be affiliated with the interdisciplinary programme and international staff of the Department. During their stay, holders of the Fellowship will be required to give one lecture to staff of the department. In addition, they may wish to give one seminar to graduates and postgraduate students. Fellows will be asked to submit a revised text of the lecture for publication within a month after their stay ends. In consultation with each Fellow, the Department will see to publication of the lecture in a suitable high-impact journal.

Job description

We offer a four-year fellowship for the completion of a PhD dissertation in the history of medieval or early-modern philosophy or science up to the Enlightenment; ancient philosophy is not excluded. Applications are invited from high-quality prospective PhD fellows who have a documentable expertise in these research areas.

The candidate will be enrolled in the Groningen Graduate School of Philosophy. A PhD training program is part of the agreement. Supervision will be carried out by the Groningen department.

The successful candidate is also expected to assist in some teaching. Knowledge of Dutch is no requirement.

Qualifications

The candidate should have a master’s degree in philosophy or related area, plus an excellent academic record. He/she should have a very good command of English and strong communication and academic writing skills.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary of € 2,222 (salary scale PhD candidates Dutch Universities) gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 2,840 gross per month in the final year, based on a fulltime position, excluding a 8% holiday allowance and a 8.3% end of the year bonus. The position requires residence in Groningen and must result in a PhD thesis within the 4-year contract period.

The position offered is for four years. The successful candidate will first be offered a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that a successful completion of the PhD thesis within the contract period is to be expected.

University Research Studentship in the Department of Social Sciences

Oxford Brookes University, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

Oxford Brookes University is pleased to offer a PhD Studentship in the Department of Social Sciences, starting in September 2017. Applications are invited for PhD proposals in Interventions: Politicising Political Thought. The supervisor team will be co-led by Prof Gary Browning (Political Theory) and Dr Doerthe Rosenow (International Relations). The project is located in the Brunel-Brookes-Research Cluster in Political Thought, therefore a third supervisor from Brunel University will join the supervisory team.

The proposed PhD project will provide an intervention that criss-crosses the disciplines of critical International Relations and the history of political thought, combining the strengths of both disciplines and critically interrogating their respective presumptions. It will intervene in the history of political thought by asking questions of past theorists in relation to thinkers that dominate the critical IR canon, and also in relation to empirical forms of the present in the light of the past.

Details of the members of the Brookes-Brunel-Research Cluster in Political Thought are given in the application pack.

The project can focus on a number of themes, including (but not confined to):

• the character of neo-liberalism, by comparing classical liberal, neo-liberal and critical thinkers (e.g. Foucault).
• the problem of materiality, by comparing ‘old’ critical materialist theories (primarily based in Marxism) to the so-called contemporary New Materialisms (e.g. in relation to the thought of Bruno Latour and Isabelle Stengers).
• the problem of colonial legacies, by analysing the colonial underpinnings of traditional political theory in relation to the decolonial critique.

Eléments de contexte :

Depuis plus de cinquante ans, philosophes, sociologues et économistes ont progressivement attiré l’attention sur la perte de centralité de la subjectivité du patient, aussi bien dans les discours médicaux que dans l’organisation des systèmes de santé. La standardisation et les progrès technologiques, conditions de l’universalisation de l’accès aux soins et d’une médecine efficace, ont induit une progressive fragmentation de l’expérience de la maladie pour le malade. Ce morcellement, lié à l’objectivisme propre à une épistémologie médicale encore positiviste, va de pair avec la généralisation de la théorie de l’agent économique et de la théorie néo-institutionnelle dans le management des institutions de soin.

En réaction à cette situation, dès les années 1960, l’idée d’une médecine capable de prendre en considération l’homme dans son intégralité, singularité et autonomie, aussi bien au niveau biologique, psychologique que social, a occupé médecins et psychologues, en Europe comme aux États-Unis. L’idée d’un soin centré-patient ou patient-centered care a été formalisée quelques décennies plus tard, et placé par l’Institute of Medicine en 2001 parmi les objectifs principaux de la réforme de la santé.

L’un des concepts-clé, implicite dans les tentatives de penser un système de santé centré autour du patient, est celui de valeur. Depuis la théorie des normes vitales proposée par Georges Canguilhem, jusqu’à la narrative-based medicine et à la value-based medecine, en passant par la client-centered therapy rogersienne et par le modèle biopsychosocial promu par George L. Engel, la question de la valeur est, de plus en plus, au centre des tentatives de compréhension du malade. A partir de ces approches, l’organisation des espaces du soin – les systèmes hospitaliers – doit être pensée de manière telle à laisser un espace pour les choix des patients dans leur parcours de soin, tout en les informant et favorisant  la formation du jugement. Un système de soin centré sur le patient ferait ainsi primer la coordination fonctionnelle sur la coordination sociale, et laisserait de la place à une réflexivité sur les choix techniques. Il constituerait ainsi l’interface concrète entre le soin et les choix politiques.

Partir de la valeur du soin signifie certes s’interroger sur son efficience, susceptible d’être mesurée par des indicateurs, mais aussi évaluer de quelle manière la centricité peut permettre au patient, sujet des soins, de mobiliser ses propres valeurs dans son parcours de soin, et lesquelles de ces valeurs l’organisation peut promouvoir. Si la maladie, en portant atteinte aux capacités de l’individu empêche, contraint, voire aliène, le défi est celui de considérer le malade comme un sujet.

La chaire :

La chaire « Valeurs du soin centré-patient », qui sera inaugurée en octobre 2016 à Lyon III, et dont le programme s’étale sur 9 ans, à l’ambition de poser la question du rapport entre le concept de « soin centré-patient » et celui valeur. À partir d’une approche interdisciplinaire – philosophie, économie, science politique, sociologie, gestion – la Chaire a pour finalité d’engager une réflexion autour de la question du sens et de la valeur de la centricité du patient dans les structures de soins.

Portée par Jean-Philippe Pierron (professeur en philosophie) et par Didier Vinot (professeur en sciences de gestion), la Chaire a comme objectif de créer de nouvelles transversalités disciplinaires et géographiques sur cet objet. Elle implique des études de cas et des missions aux Etats-Unis, sur le site de la Cleveland Clinic, en Chine, sur le site de la DeltaWest Clinic de Shanghaï et dans des cliniques de médecine alternatives au Mexico, et elle engage des partenaires académiques dans les trois pays, ainsi qu’en France.

Dans le cadre de cette recherche, pendant les premiers trois ans, 2 doctorants seront recrutés, un en sciences des organisations (au sens large : science économique, science politique, sciences de gestion, sociologie) et un en philosophie (philosophie du soin, éthique, philosophie de la médecine).

Le  contrat doctoral:

La recherche contrat doctoral en philosophie consistera à déployer la consistance de l’idée de « valeurs du soin » ainsi que les conditions de possibilités éthiques, politiques et ontologiques d’un système de soins centré sur le patient. Le projet du doctorant en philosophie doit adopter une approche réflexive, avoir comme objet l’évolution des concepts d’évaluation, d’efficience et de valeur autour du soin, et, garder, comme horizon idéal, la possibilité de réinstaller le concept de valeur dans les mesures d’évaluation  des modèles de soin. Le projet de recherche, rattaché à l’Irphil, pourra ainsi porter sur des aspects épistémologiques, politiques, éthiques et historiques de la question, et pourra engager des auteurs classiques de l’histoire de la philosophie ou la discussion de cas concrets, engageant ainsi des instruments et concepts philosophiques ou des sciences humaines.

Les sujets abordés dans le projet de thèse pourront concerner :

-         Une définition épistémologique du concept de santé centrée-patient et l’histoire des conceptualisation du rapport entre normale et pathologique, notamment à travers une confrontation entre les approches dites « normativistes » et « naturalistes » aux idées de santé et de maladie produites depuis les années 1980.

-         Une discussion de la portée épistémologique et politique de concepts comme ceux de personne, d’individu et d’autonomie, engagées constamment dans les discours contemporains sur le soin, tant dans les réflexions sur la santé centrée-patient que sur la médecine personnalisée.

-         Une analyse des approches « holistes » en médecine, engageant les idées d’organisme et de totalité vivante développées pendant au cours du XX siècle.

-         Un examen philosophique des transformations des pratiques hospitalières au cours des derniers cinquante ans, éventuellement  prenant  appui sur les études archéologiques sur la naissance et l’évolution de la clinique (Michel Foucault).

-         Une mise relation entre les réflexions sur l’autonomie du patient (patient dit « autonome ») dans les systèmes de soins et les revendications politiques propres aux mouvements des patients.

-         Une réflexion, développée à partir d’études de cas – tant en Europe qu’en Asie et aux Etats-Unis – sur les exemples de systèmes de soins centrés sur le patient. Les approches pourraient engager les théories du care ou bien avec les outils et les méthodes de l’approche par les capabilités (cf. Amartya Sen et Martha Nussbaum)

-         La possibilité de l’élaboration d’une méthode transdisciplinaire d’analyse de la relation soignant-patient.

-         Une histoire et une analyse des différents modèles de relation patient-soignant (patient autonome, modèle paternaliste, etc.), et leur analyse philosophique.

On attend du candidat à l’appel à projet qu’il ait la capacité de proposer une mise en perspective des hypothèses précédentes à partir de l’élaboration d’une philosophie du soin attentive aux enjeux éthiques politiques et ontologiques liés à l’épreuve de l’humain malade.

2 contrats doctoraux seront recrutés, un en sciences des organisations (au sens large : science économique, science politique, sciences de gestion, sociologie), un en philosophie (philosophie du soin, philosophie de la médecine). Ils auront à travailler de concert au sein d’un programme plus large de Chaire santé (voire plaquette pièce jointe). Ils participeront à l’organisation d’un workshop international dès décembre 2015-06-05 et seront associés à la préparation des réunions de recherche et collaboreront à des publications conjointes

starting October 1st, 2016, within the Graduiertenkolleg (research training group) GRK 2073 Integrating Ethics and Epistemology of Scientific Research.

Appointment will be for three years. The positions will be filled as 65% Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter positions on salary scale TV-L 13. (This amounts to a monthly net salary roughly between 1460 and 1580 €, plus benefits such as health insurance.) Two of the positions are expected to be located at Leibniz Universität Hannover and the other two at Bielefeld University.

GRK 2073 Integrating Ethics and Epistemology of Scientific Research is a research training group that is established as a joint project by Leibniz Universität Hannover and Bielefeld University. It is funded by the German national funding agency (DFG). Its research program aims at bridging the gap between theory and practice in philosophy of science in two ways: firstly, it examines new connections between theoretical philosophy of science (epistemology, metaphysics) and practical philosophy of science (ethics of science, political philosophy of science); secondly, it analyses relevant links between the cognitive dimension of the sciences (theories, hypotheses, discourses, models) and the material culture of the sciences (objects, equipment, experiments, practices). The working language of GRK 2073 is English.

Applicants must be fluent in English and should be able to demonstrate an interest in philosophy of science, broadly construed to include also ethics and political philosophy of science. They should hold a pertinent university degree (typically an MA degree in Philosophy or HPS) and must be eligible to enroll as doctoral students in Philosophy at Leibniz Universität Hannover or Bielefeld University. They need to specify a dissertation project that fits the aims of the research program of GRK 2073 as described above.

The obligations of each holder of one of the advertised positions will be to conduct research on a dissertation project that contributes to the research program of GRK 2073 and to participate in the training activities that are specified by the qualification program. Holders of the positions must enroll as doctoral students in philosophy at Leibniz Universität Hannover or Bielefeld University. It is expected that they take residence in the region of their respective campus.

The Graduate School at Arts, Faculty of Arts, Aarhus University invites applications for a PhD fellowship in Trust and Risk in Literature provided the necessary funding is available. This PhD fellowship is available as of 1 September 2016 for a period of up to three years (5+3). The candidate who is awarded the fellowship must commence his/her PhD degree programme on 1 September 2016.

The PhD fellowship is advertised within the Trust and Risk in Literature Project (http://projects.au.dk/trust-and-risk-in-literature-network/). This project is interested in connecting the ethical, philosophical and linguistic expertise of literary studies to a growing body of research in ‘Trust Studies’, which identifies risk as a way to modify traditional understandings of trust.

We are interested in research projects that explore how English literature in either the seventeenth or eighteenth centuries interrogate trust or risk, either historically or philosophically. How, for instance, was trust - or the absence of trust - represented in poetry, prose or drama during periods of dramatic social change such as the English civil wars or industrial revolution? How does literature reflect the rise of risk as a way of evaluating and engaging with a complex world? The project should engage with current discussions about trust and risk in society in other fields such as social anthropology, governance, economics, systems management and/or business studies. The successful candidate will be part of the Trust and Risk Research Group and international network and will have the opportunity to present their research at upcoming Trust and Risk in Literature Network meetings as well as major conferences such as MLA. There is some scope for comparative studies with literature in other languages but the PhD will be conducted and written in English.
