The Research Project on Power, conflict and freedom: Spinoza and the paths of modern and contemporary political philosophy on democracy* announces one (1) postdoctoral position in the Philosophy Department, University of São Paulo (USP), in:

- Early Modern Political Philosophy (16th-18th centuries)
or
- History of Early Modern Philosophy (16th-18th centuries)

The fellowship initially carries a two-year term, but is renewable for one additional year (but not after July 2024), beginning in July 2021 (with start date negotiable). The Fellow will be a Post-Doctoral member of the Department of Philosophy, and will join the research activities of the Research Project (research seminars, conferences, meetings and elaboration of scientific reports). This fellowship corresponds to a research position, with no teaching responsibilities attached.

The fellowship is sponsored by FAPESP. The chosen candidate will earn R$ 7.373,10 (Brazilian currency) per month, tax free.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

Applicants should have completed the PhD in Philosophy, but, as required by FAPESP, not at the University of São Paulo. The PhD should have been completed preferably no earlier than 2016. For the position, the applicant must include:
- an updated Curriculum Vitae;
- copy of PhD certification (diploma or other official document).
- a statement of proposed research (no more than 10 pages, plus 1 separate page for bibliography), specifying the topic(s) to be studied, including a research schedule for the first two years, a list of expected publications and their connection with the theme of the main project;
- a writing sample (dissertation chapter or other paper);
- one letter of recommendation.

*Power, conflict and freedom: Spinoza and the paths of modern and contemporary political philosophy on democracy

Abstract: Three moments are decisive in the constitution of political philosophy: the one that Moses Finley called “the invention of politics” to refer to the birth of Greek democracy and the Roman republic; the one defined by Machiavelli through the original division of society between the desire of the Great to oppress and command and that of the People to be neither oppressed nor commanded; and the one which, with Spinoza, introduced the modern idea of democracy as an immanent power of the multitudo or collective power of creation and expression of rights. These three moments open the field of the history of the invention of the republic and democracy as an exercise of freedom and invention of rights, politics being effected as a passage from the logic of force to the logic of power, that is, from war to legitimacy of conflict under laws. Of these three f ounding moments, we will take as point of reference the modern conception of Spinozistic origin. By means of this we will examined, on the one hand, the political significance of the emergence of modern ideas of individual and natural / civil right, and, on the other hand, the continuities and ruptures in political thought brought about by contemporary philosophy – that is, the development of ideas of class struggle, of state, of power and of violence. We believe that it is possible to find there a tradition within which Spinoza’s political thought gains a new light, a tradition designed by contemporary authors who, like Spinoza, in so far as they were concerned to mark the legitimate instance of the conflict, searched for support in the ancients and Machiavelli in order to understand the political participation of the citizens under the aegis of the struggle for guarantee and conquest of new rights, having as reference the defense of freedom of dissent.

Of special interest for the project is research in philosophical aesthetics with a special focus on the philosophy of mind, philosophy of perception, and ethics.

Principal  duties: The postdoctoral associate is mainly supposed to be engaged in research and to take care of certain administrative duties associated with the project. However, some teaching and supervision of students will also be involved. The position involves presence at the department in accordance with existing collective agreements.

Requirements: To be eligible one must have shown research expertise in analytic aesthetics, completed one’s PhD at the latest in the summer of 2019, shown pedagogical expertise, and has the personal characteristics required to perform the duties associated with the post well.

Additional qualifications: Special weight will be attached to the applicant’s research expertise, but pedagogical expertise and administrative skills will also be taken into consideration. In the evaluation of research expertise the most important factor is quality. The applicant should also have the ability to plan, initiate and develop research independently.

Two Postdocs in Philosophy and/or History of Biology

The FNRS MIS project Digital History and Philosophy of Biology (DHPB), led by Prof. Charles Pence at the Centre de philosophie des sciences et sociétés (CEFISES) and Institut supérieur de philosophie (ISP) at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) is advertising two two-year post-doctoral fellowships in history and/or philosophy of biology.

The DHPB project aims to expand the use of the tools of digital humanities – particularly textual analysis – to study the history and philosophy of the life sciences. We have developed an application (see doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0146004) and a corpus of journal article data (see doi:10.1016/j.shpsc.2016.04.003) enabling us to study at a broad scale the journal literature in evolutionary biology and related fields, offering a novel perspective on the growth and development of biological science (dating back to as early as 1860).
We will gladly review postdoctoral fellowship applications from candidates trained in either philosophy or history of science, as well as digital humanities or the sciences (if such candidates have expertise in philosophical or historical work). The project has a broad interdisciplinary focus, and the PI is trained in both the history and the philosophy of science. The ideal candidate will have similar interdisciplinary training and research credentials.
The project provides funding for each postdoc to hold one workshop inviting a senior researcher to campus for one week, and for the group as a whole to host a final conference in early 2021 (with the intent of publishing an edited volume containing its proceedings), as well as equipment and travel.
This postdoctoral research fellowship is funded by the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique – FNRS under grant no. F.4526.19.

• Candidates must not have resided or exercised their principal activity (work, study, etc.) in Belgium for more than 24 months within the last 3 years. (Requirement of granting agency.)
• Interest in working with digital tools is required; some demonstrated expertise or use of such tools (prior work in DH, visualization or programming experience, etc.) is a benefit.
• A proposed research project in the history or philosophy of science that would be either impossible without, or substantially aided by, the application of digital humanities techniques.
• Strong enthusiasm for interdisciplinary, collaborative work.
• Written and oral proficiency in English is required. UCLouvain is a French-speaking university, but the working language of the lab is English. French proficiency would thus be useful for daily life, but is not mandatory.

PostDoc : Early Modern Cosmology: Institutions and Metaphysics

The research endeavor addresses the confessional, political and ideological settings of early modern science, with a particular focus on cosmology. The project has an overarching thematic, geographical, and geopolitical scope and is reinforced by a methodological and philosophical reflection on political epistemology informed by Gramscian views on society, culture, and politics.

As Principal Investigator I am currently looking for one post-doctoral fellow with an outstanding project in one or more of the following research areas relevant to the ERC endeavor:

1.             Early-modern cultural history of science: Cosmology and related disciplines in their socio-political context;

2.            Early-modern institutional history: Early-modern institutional history of ideas    and/or epistemic webs in their socio-cultural and political entanglements;

CALL FOR FELLOWSHIP 2018-2019

Access to Fellowship

Access to the Willard McCarty Fellowship is given to interdisciplinary-minded academic and non-academic researchers. The Department reserves the right to appoint one Fellow for his or her outstanding and exceptional work in the field. The alternative route to the scheme is to apply as outlined in the Section ‘How and When to Apply?’.
Under both routes, the Fellowship must be undertaken at the Department of Digital Humanities for a period from one to two weeks.
Grants of up to £2,500 to successful candidates will cover the following:

• Round trip standard class fares
• Accommodation and subsistence

We can provide advice, but appointees must make their own travel and living arrangements. They will need to seek additional funding elsewhere to cover any expenses that exceed the grant.
The Department will provide Fellows with office space. Fellows will be welcome to attend classes and seminars, to work with the staff of the Department, meet affiliated partners, such as staff of the King’s Digital Lab, and access Strand campus and all facilities of the Maughan Library.

The Role of Fellows

Fellows will be affiliated with the interdisciplinary programme and international staff of the Department. During their stay, holders of the Fellowship will be required to give one lecture to staff of the department. In addition, they may wish to give one seminar to graduates and postgraduate students. Fellows will be asked to submit a revised text of the lecture for publication within a month after their stay ends. In consultation with each Fellow, the Department will see to publication of the lecture in a suitable high-impact journal.

Applications are invited for a fully-funded three-year full-time postdoctoral fellowship in Digital Humanities in the Department of Literary Studies at Ghent University, Belgium. The successful candidate will participate in the project “Agents of Change: Women Editors and Socio-Cultural Transformation, 1710-1920”, funded by an ERC Starting Grant and directed by Prof. dr. Marianne Van Remoortel. This project aims to map the transnational networks of intellectual and textual exchange through which women editors of periodicals impacted social and cultural life in early-eighteenth- to early-twentieth-century Europe.

Job description

You participate in the project as a team member and will work on the digital component of the project. Your main responsibility will be the project’s nodegoat database, which currently contains data on over 1400 women editors and their periodicals. You will enrich the database with textual data and provide a transnational network perspective, using digital research methods to unearth, explore and visualize connections among editors and periodicals across national and language boundaries. In addition, you will further develop our online Database of European Women Editors and work with various stakeholders to ensure that the database is fully in line with Linked Open Data best practices.

Profile

You hold a doctoral degree in literature, history or another field of the humanities or social sciences, and have a clear interest in literary, cultural and/or social history. Experience in women’s history would be considered a plus.

You have demonstrable knowledge and skills in data mining, data visualization and social network analysis. Knowledge of Research Data Management would be considered a plus.

You have excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Working knowledge of other modern European languages would be considered a plus.

You have an aptitude for original and creative work, independently as well as in a team.

This fully-funded full-time postdoctoral fellowship is offered for a period of three years. The starting date is 1 June 2017 at the latest.

Fellowships at Descartes Centre

The Descartes Centre at Utrecht University offers fellowships to promote intellectual exchange and collaboration in the history and/or the philosophy of the sciences and the humanities.
Two kinds of fellowships:

• A Junior Fellow conducts research at Utrecht University and/or at Dutch museums or archives, and presents the results of their work at one of the colloquia of the Descartes Centre.
• A Senior Fellow not only conducts research but also contributes actively to the Descartes Centre by means of public lectures, research seminars and/or teaching.

Candidates should have a clear affinity with the history or the philosophy of the sciences and the humanities, as shown by their list of publications and research proposal. Furthermore, the application should demonstrate an existing or potential collaboration with one or more members of the Descartes Centre, a collaboration that is supported by a corresponding letter of recommendation.
Fellows are expected to participate in the activities of the Descartes Centre whenever possible. The start and end date of a fellowship should make such involvement practically feasible.
Fellowships are available for up to three months.
Senior Fellows can have their costs (housing etc.) compensated for with a maximum of €2500 per month; for Junior Fellows the maximum compensation is €1500. The permanent home address of the fellow should be outside of the Netherlands.

Candidates are invited to supply the Descartes Centre with:

• a completed application form
• a curriculum vitae
• a list of publications (no longer than 2 pages)
• a research proposal of 750 words max.
• Senior Fellows: an outline of the public lecture(s), research seminar(s) or other teaching activities that they propose to engage in while residing in Utrecht
• a letter of recommendation by at least one of the members of the Descartes Centre

Résumé

Un contrat postdoctoral d’une année en histoire de la philosophie du 18e siècle est ouvert au département de philosophie de l’Université de Montréal à partir du 1er janvier 2016. La candidate ou le candidat choisi(e) devra consacrer une partie de son stage à un travail d’édition des mémoires philosophiques de l’Académie de Berlin (1744-1769) sous la direction de François Duchesneau et Christian Leduc. Les détails seront fournis lors de l’embauche. Il ou elle devra aussi soumettre une courte description d’un projet de recherche individuel sur la philosophie du 18e siècle.

Qualifications
- Doctorat dans le domaine de la philosophie du 18e siècle
- Très bonne maitrise du français
- Maitrise souhaitée en allemand et en latin

Three Postdoctoral Fellowships in Applied Ethics, Philosophy of Neuroscience, and Foundations of Physics.

The Rotman Institute of Philosophy is inviting applications for three Postdoctoral Fellowships in Applied Ethics, Philosophy of Neuroscience (in collaboration with Western's Brain and Mind Institute), and Foundations of Physics.
 
The Rotman Institute of Philosophy is situated in one of Canada's leading departments of philosophy. It brings together philosophers and scientists to work on problems of social significance. The faculty includes two Canada Research Chair holders; ongoing research focuses on a variety philosophical problems arising in contemporary physics, biology, cognitive neuroscience, and medical science.
 
Each Postdoctoral Fellowship has a one-year term with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The Fellow will have an office within the Rotman Institute. She or he will be required to involve themselves fully in the research life of the Institute by conducting research leading to peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations, and by participating in conferences, research groups, reading groups, and outreach activities.
 
Candidates must have had a PhD in Philosophy conferred within five years of the start of the Fellowship. All PhD requirements must be completed by the starting date of this Postdoctoral Fellowship, July 1, 2015. The stipend is $40,500 CDN. Additionally, the Fellow will be provided a research allowance of $5,000 CDN.
 
Postdoctoral Fellows at the Rotman Institute have gone on to great things. Rachael Brown (Postdoc in the Institute 2013-2014) won the Sir Karl Popper Prize for 2014, for the best paper appearing in the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science. Kerry McKenzie (2013-14) was hired as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at UC San Diego after her Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Rotman Institute. Trevor Pearce (2011-12) has also become an Assistant Professor, at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

1)     Programme Avenir Lyon Saint-Etienne Post-doctorat 2015-2016

Dans le cadre du programme Avenir Lyon Saint-Etienne, l’Université de Lyon lance une opération de financement de 10 Post Docs d’une durée de 12 à 18 mois afin de consolider et d’élargir le périmètre d’excellence du Site Lyon-Saint-Etienne et de soutenir l’arrivée sur le site ou le retour de jeunes chercheurs sur la période 2015-16. Les post-doctorats soutenus devront commencer au plus tard au 1^er Mars 2015.

La qualité des candidatures, préférentiellement de jeunes chercheurs étrangers, susceptibles d’apporter de nouvelles voies d’interdisciplinarité, est le principal critère de sélection. Outre la qualité du projet de mobilité, la sélection des candidatures prendra en compte les critères suivants :

1-     Lien avec la politique scientifique du PA-LSE : elle est centrée sur 3 grands champs d’intervention scientifique : « Sciences et Ingénierie du Développement Durable »,   «Santé Globale et Société » et « Modélisation de la complexité ».

2-     Lien avec la politique internationale du PA-LSE : elle s’appuie sur une alliance internationale et des partenariats privilégiés avec une dizaine de sites : l’Université de Tokyo, l’Université Tohoku, l’East China Normal University (Shanghai), l’Université d’Ottawa, l’Université de Sao Paulo, Université de Sherbrooke, l’Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Plateau universitaire lémanique transalpin : Genève, Neuchâtel, Lausanne, Turin et Milan.

3-     Lien avec des partenaires socio-économiques

1-      Le candidat doit être titulaire d’un doctorat

2-      Le candidat ne doit pas être présent sur le site depuis plus de six mois

3-      La candidature doit être transmise par l’un des établissements partenaires du Programme Avenir Lyon Saint-Etienne

Le financement maximum est de 120 K€ sur 24 mois.

Le candidat doit avoir soutenu sa thèse depuis 5 ans, au maximum (page 6 du guide joint).

La candidature est possible quelle que soit la nationalité du candidat.

Les critères de sélection d’AXA reposent sur l’inscription dans les risques, le caractère innovant et original du projet, sur sa faisabilité, sur l’excellence de  la candidature et notamment sur la mobilité internationale du candidat, mais aussi sur l’environnement de travail offert au post-doctorant pour la construction du projet.

Critère de mobilité internationale :
o  Mobilité internationale actuelle: Changement d'établissement et / ou pays entre établissement actuel de post-doc demandeur et ciblée.
Il est prévu que la plupart des candidats sélectionnés se déplacent dans un autre pays entre la position actuelle et ciblée.
Cette mobilité internationale est plus valorisée que la mobilité nationale .
Si un candidat reste dans la même institution , un justification claire d'une telle décision est nécessaire.
o Précédent mobilité internationale : minimum de 1 semestre passé à l'étranger depuis le mémoire de Master .

Deux étapes de sélection sont prévues :

Etape interne :
Une sélection interne sera  effectuée par la Direction de la recherche en adéquation avec les critères d'Axa suite à l’évaluation par des rapporteurs.
Deux projets maximum par laboratoire seront acceptés. Nous demandons aux directeurs de laboratoires d'effectuer une sélection et de nous transmettre les deux projets.

Date limite : mardi 25 novembre 2014

Les candidatures devront être transmises au service Ingénierie de Projets (ingenierie.projets@ens-lyon.fr), validées par le directeur du laboratoire, accompagnées des éléments suivants :

- La présentation du projet postdoctoral en anglais (1,5 pages maximum+ références)
- Le CV détaillé du candidat (2 pages maximum+ ½ page des principales publications)

- Le relevé de carrière (1 page maximum)

Le projet précisera dans quelle catégorie de risques listés par AXA il s’inscrit.

Le contenu de ces documents devra permettre de vérifier les critères d’admissibilité et les conditions jointes en annexe et extraites du guide joint.

Etape de soumission auprès d'AXA :
Les candidats sélectionnés par l'ENS de Lyon devront soumettre leur dossier en ligne sur le site d'Axa en deux étapes :

- les éléments listés ci-dessus seront à rentrer sur le site entre le 8 décembre 2014 et le 15 décembre 2014.

- les éléments du dossier complet seront à rentrer sur le site entre le 20 février 2015 et le 19 mars 2015. Ils devront contenir les informations suivantes :
            - une description détaillée du projet de recherche postdoctoral en anglais (6 pages max) précisant les objectifs, l’argumentation, la méthodologie, le plan des travaux et le budget

            - une liste des publications (2 pages max)

            - une liste de participation aux colloques (2 pages max)

            - un CV détaillé et actualisé incluant la participation à des colloques (2 pages max)
            - deux lettres de recommandation

Le comité scientifique de la Fondation AXA pour la Recherche publiera les résultats des évaluations le 10 juin 2015.
Les candidats auront 12 mois à compter de l'annonce des résultats pour commencer leur contrat postdoctoral.
